Entry no. 6 : Fryd – Skipper Jarl Spandow
St. Helena Race 2024 – Fryd
Fryd, Norwegian for ‘delight’, is a NAJAD 405P (40.5 foot) cruiser / racer, launched in 2015. She is owned and will be skippered by Jarl Spandow from Sweden. Jarl has cruised extensively with Fryd in Northern Europe (Scandinavia, Germany, United Kingdom, France, Portugal, Spain and North Africa), Caribbean, Cuba, Eastern USA, Canada, Greenland and Iceland and has participated in many offshore races during these travels including in the North Sea and the double handed AZAB from Falmouth to Azores and back. Jarl is currently sailing double handed with his son from Salvador to Cape Town, due mid-November, in time to prepare for the race.
Jarl will sail with Andrew Walker from Hout Bay. They met when sailing with Skip Novak’s Pelagic Australis in the Antarctic, and have since sailed together on many of the legs of Fryd’s wanderings, including Scotland, trans Atlantic to Caribbean, Cuba, and Labrador / Greenland and in the last year on the North Africa leg of the trip from Norway to Cape Town. Jarl and Andrew will sail Fryd back to Cape Town from St Helena, where she will remain until the Cape to Rio Race in 2025.
